An Interview with Writer David Watts Barton (Part 3)
SacTV.com "Video of the Day" review by
Alex Cosper on March 10, 2012
David Watts Barton discusses highlights of his writing career and focuses on the 1980s when he first
started writing pop music reviews for The Sacramento Bee. He points out that rock artists were feeling
their power back in that era with huge benefit shows. He credits the late concert promoter Bill Graham
as the key to bringing big shows to Sacramento. He said it worked because Graham have a deep love for
music whereas these days the concert industry has become a money game. David says the 80s was a high point
for journalism because back then newspapers had budgets to send writers around the country.
This interview is the first of a four-part series, shot by Joe-G of SacRockRadio.com in front of Crocker
Art Museum on Friday, March 2, 2012. David comments on top local artists but says there really isn't a
consistent local scene with critical mass. Most of his artist interviews were before the concerts. In 2012 David hosts interviews on
Capital Public Radio. He recently intereviewed Rob Fauble, owner of The Beat, who said that NPR and Insight are the only radio shows
that bring people into the store. Artists he mentions include Sister Crayon, Sea of Bees, Ganglians, Musical Squares.
